Changes to Butler Library

There were many service enhancements in Butler Library over the summer of 2015, including adding seating and printers, and moving some computers, scanners, and books to new locations within the building. To locate a printer, computer, or scanner, please visit the Butler Library Computers, Printers, Scanners page.

  • We added over 90 new seats throughout the library, with the highest concentration of new seats in room 301.
  • We have increased wi-fi access in that room to accommodate the additional seats.
  • We moved research support from room 301 to the Digital Humanities Center (room 305), where from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, librarians are available to help you with research and digital projects.

The space previously occupied by the CUIT computer lab — Rooms 212 and 213 on the entry level of Butler — is now the University’s Center for Teaching & Learning. The Center will provide professional development and support services for Columbia faculty and teaching assistants, and partner with faculty, departments, and schools to improve and advance teaching performance, share best practices, and promote innovations in pedagogy, curricula, and the use of instructional technology.

  • All of the computers and printers from the former CUIT lab are now distributed throughout the building. This guide will help you find the new locations.
  • The University has a new printing system, PawPrint. There are 12 PawPrint stations in Butler, including one new color printer. Check CUIT’s PawPrint page for more information on printing and for other PawPrint locations on campus.

Some books from the Milstein Collection have also moved to new locations. Books previously located in rooms 406, 406A, and 409 were consolidated in 403 to make space for approximately 18,000 books from the Barnard Library. These books were selected by Barnard Library staff and are the books that circulated most often from Barnard Library. These books can be found in CLIO and are available for check out. The books will be in Butler Library until the new Barnard library opens (projected date of 2018). For more information about Barnard Library collections and services available now and throughout the construction phase, see Barnard’s Teaching and Learning Center updates. Other book shifts occurred in many of the Milstein 24-Hour reading rooms. The Milstein Collection Call Number Guide gives the most up-to-date locations.  Books in the reference collection are now located in four rooms in Butler and will be reflected in CLIO:

  • 301 and 310
  • 209  Atlases
  • 303A  Language dictionaries
