Provides full text and full page image access to 100 periodical titles reflecting the growth and variety of reading practices between 1800 and 1900. The titles range from Atalanta, a periodical directed to young female readers, through the long-lived Bell’s Life in London and Sporting Chronicle (1822-86); Horse and Hound, begun in 1884 and still published today; Little Folks; the Magazine for Boys and Girls (1871-1933); and the novelist Charlotte Yonge’s Monthly Packet of Evening Readings for Younger Members of the English Church (1851-99). Every front page, editorial, article, poem, recipe, advertisement and classified ad that appeared within their pages for the time period available will be easily accessible from what is a virtual chronicle of history for this period. Users of the database will be able to search every word on every page.
