Judeo-Arabic romanization table

A new ALA/LC romanization table has been approved for Judeo-Arabic (Arabic written in Hebrew script).  For the first time in ALA/LC romanization of languages written in Hebrew or Arabic script, it’s strictly letter-by-letter and does not instruct the cataloger to “supply” unwritten short vowels.  So the results will look very different from what we’re used to seeing in other Hebrew or Arabic records: כוואכב (which would be كوكب in Arabic script) will be romanized kwwʼkb, not kawkab. Note 2 in the table gives the justification for this decision.  It will be interesting to see if this approach is the beginning of a new trend.
