An Evening in Butler Library

by Alyssa Lamontagne CC’ 11

Blogging about your night in Butler is common occurance, but always makes the night go faster. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had a night like this!

6:12 pm Have arrived at Butler for an all-night essay writing session. The second floor appears to be fully booked, but I have found a comfortable little nook in room 3M04 with a significant amount of privacy and enough table space for my laptop and books. I am, it seems, the luckiest girl in Butler.

7:38 pm Have checked Twitter and Facebook approximately nineteen times, texted three friends who also happen to be in Butler, made myself more comfortable by removing several layers of clothing, and read the entire archives of Hark, a Vagrant! (the perfect webcomic for the literary type).

I also have a title for my essay! Untitled.

I think I may need to get a coffee from the cafe.

7:57 pm Procured coffee but realized that two of my classmates were sitting in the Butler Lounge and spent ten minutes discussing the essay topic. The nice thing about everyone studying in one place is how it facilitates collaboration. The terrible thing is how easy it makes procrastination.

8:10 pm I have slurped my way to the bottom of my spill-proof mug (est. 2000), much to the chagrin of my neighbors downstairs in 304 and am somehow feeling no more alert than I was before. Did they give me decaf by mistake, or have I simply overloaded my system with caffeine? Only time will tell.

In my effort to psyche myself up to doing work, I have made the mistake of listening to an awesome version of Rye Whiskey. Now I’m on a Punch Brothers. kick. It’s certainly not the soothing classical music I usually associate with Butler Library, but it’s still pretty motivational.

10:23 pm Have written two pages. Spent the last ten minutes lost in thought essay-related things, staring at the floor. This is not good, given that I am supposed to be thinking about essay-related things.

Do you think anyone will be offended if I eat an apple?

10:45 pm Someone just gave me a dirty look for eating my apple, but I ate it anyway. I still only have two pages, but I sure have done a lot of thinking in the past few minutes.

That’s what I’ll keep telling myself.

11:10 pm I wish I was as persistent as that kid who gave me the dirty look for eating. He looks like he’s been here for the last week. Meanwhile I’ve only been here five hours and am about ready to pack it in. How can I be so tired? I’ve only done a little bit of work!

11:20 pm Sigh. Every time. I’m going home to finish this in the morning. I can’t be one of those library sleepers, even though it’s a proud Columbia tradition. I’ll see you all in the morning.
