Acquired by Columbia in 2006, The Makino Mamoru Collection on the History of East Asian Film contains mostly print materials, such as scripts, storyboards, posters and leaflets that pertain to predominantly Japanese films, many of which pre-date World War II. Columbia University Libraries has just debuted a new website celebrating this vast collection which covers various genres of film, including experimental film, educational film, documentary film, news film, amateur film, and animated film, among many others.
Learn about the on-going processing efforts (there are nearly 80,000 items in the collection!) as well as information about accessing and using the collection. You’ll also find out more about an upcoming day-long symposium about the collection planned for this November. "The Makino Collection at Columbia: the Present and Future of an Archive” will examine research in the field of Japanese film studies that has emerged as a result of the collection’s holdings. We look forward to seeing you there.
